Wood (biomass) as an alternative renewable energy is particularly suited for Alaska's communities. It is an economical and sustainable source for both heat and hot water. Demonstration projects are vital, prior to large scale replication in Alaska. Ionia's Long House shows that both the GARN wood fired boiler and masonry heaters are model technologies for businesses of all sizes, public infrastructure such as schools, gyms and pools, as well as most private homes, in many rural areas. These technologies are ecologically, socially and economically viable. Costs of construction are recouped relatively quickly through the considerable savings in fuel. Fossil fuel costs are rising dramatically and the cost on our environment is equally unaffordable. The future of many rural communities will depend on improving energy efficiency and developing renewable energy resources. It is a high priority of Ionia to demonstrate the practicality of these common sense changes.
